Our History

How American community colleges began international outreach
CCID’s journey began in 1976. Dr. Maxwell C. King, President of Brevard Community College and Dr. Robert L. Brueder of Brevard Community College underwent a study abroad familiarization tour to Europe, sponsored by the Consortium for International Education (CIE) in the summer of 1975. This opportunity was momentous as it inspired Drs. King and Brueder to think about how community colleges can, and should, be more involved in the international arena.

By 1976, Dr. King, Dr. Brueder and other visionaries created the basis of what CCID would become. These includes an emphasis on the development of students, faculty, communities and the workforce at community colleges. To this day, this is being accomplished by transferring cultural knowledge, exchanging faculty and students across borders and preparing for a global economy.

CCID Today

American community colleges contribute to international development in an increasingly global world
While an emphasis on exporting trade skills to foreign countries during the 1970s has lessened, CCID and its member colleges continue to identify opportunities and resources to build knowledge-sharing and skills development through curricula, programs, partnerships and other opportunities with institutions, organizations and governments across the globe.

Today, CCID’s approach to internationalization is more comprehensive and dynamic, acknowledging a more expansive community college landscape while paying homage to its roots in vocational training.

CCID's Mission

Community Colleges for International Development engages and empowers an international association of community, technical, and vocational institutions to create globally engaged learning environments.
CCID's Vision

That all community, technical and vocational institutions integrate international perspectives and experiences into their curricula and campus culture in order to develop globally competent students, faculty, and staff.
  • Advocate for internationalization, access, and inclusion in community, technical and vocational college learning
  • Increase the CCID network of international education professionals
  • Enhance capacity building and cultivate professional development for CCID members
  • Aid in the development of global curricula and faculty training
