CCID Program:
​Advancing Peacebuilding, Conflict Resolution, and Diplomacy Awareness in Community Colleges

Virtual Program

Objectives
In these two-hour workshops, community college professionals will explore applied means of incorporating peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and diplomacy skills with students. 

Participants will:
  • Be introduced to major conceptual frameworks for peacebuilding and related areas with an emphasis on global applications
  • Consider past initiatives that been developed at the community college level (many of which are documented in Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource (USIP Press 2013)
  • Explore more recent approaches that have been developed and have been successful in community colleges
  • Working in an experiential way, attendees will participate in activities/models that demonstrate how peacebuilding and related areas can be integrated into traditional classroom, student activities, and technological enhanced environments
  • Participants will leave the workshop with tangible approaches/activities they can use with students

Program
The program will be divided into one-hour segments. The first hour will cover the first three objectives listed above. In the second hour, working in groups, participants will develop activities/models/assignments that can be used with students to advance peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and diplomacy awareness.

Outcomes
Participants will take back to their colleges tangible assignments that they can use with students in a range of applications.

Facilitator
David J. Smith, President of the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education

David J. Smith is an educator focusing on the fields of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and humanitarian action. He is the president of the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education, Inc., a 501c3 not-for-profit that offers experiential learning opportunities for students and professionals. He was a senior program officer and manager of national outreach at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He has taught at Georgetown University, Drexel University, American University, and currently at the Carter School at George Mason University. He was full time (tenured) faculty at Harford Community College where we has awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar grant to teach peace studies and conflict resolution at the University of Tartu (Estonia).  David is a recipient of the William Kreidler Award for Distinguished Service to the field of Conflict Resolution given by the Association for Conflict Resolution. He has published Peace Jobs: A Student’s Guide to Starting a Career Working for Peace (Information Age Publishing, 2016) and Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource (USIP Press, 2013).  He directs the National Community College Peacebuilding Seminar and is president of the Community Colleges Chapter of the Fulbright Association. David is a graduate of American University (BA), George Mason University (MS, conflict resolution), University of Missouri (Grad. Cert., positive psychology) and the University of Baltimore (JD).
